Working in Travel and Tourism
The tourism industry is highly sought-after as a career path. Travel agent jobs and other jobs in the tourism agency allow you to assist other people with making travel plans and enjoying their vacations once they arrive at their destinations. Hotels, transportation, recreational parks and restaurants are all parts of the travel and tourism industry.
Jobs in Travel and Tourism
There are many different industries that come together to make up the tourism industry. Because this industry is spread across so many different areas, there are jobs available at a variety of different levels. Some common jobs in travel and tourism are:
- Casino dealer: This job is available nearly anywhere in the world that gambling is legal. Dealers help guests play various games. They deal cards, take bets and ensure fair play.
- Concierge: These individuals assist people who are staying at a hotel. They attend to all of the needs of the guests in the hotel.
- Cruise ship director: This job includes acting as the go-to person onboard a cruise ship for all activities and tours.
- Lifeguard: Lifeguards are responsible for making sure that patrons are safe in a pool or at the beach. They need to take safety courses and be CPR certified.
- Travel agent: Travel agents assist individuals and groups with making their travel plans. This normally includes coordinating airline tickets, hotel stays and tours.
- Travel guide: Travel guides help people learn and explore destinations. There are tour guides on foot, on buses and on boats.

Jobs in the travel and tourism industry are always in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the tourism industry is expected to hold 15 million jobs in 2016. The three main components of jobs in tourism are:
- Arts and entertainment
- Food services
- Hotels.
The salary for tourism jobs varies widely, depending on the responsibilities and training required. For example, while entry-level amusement park workers make minimum wage, experienced cruise ship directors can earn up to high five figure salaries.
Education, Training and Work Experience
Training for tourism jobs will depend on the type of job you are interested in. Entry-level jobs often just require good work ethic and strong interpersonal skills. Those interested in hospitality careers, such as hotel management, can attend vocational schools to get an associate's degree in hospitality management. Courses are also available in being a travel agent.
For some jobs in travel, no education is required. However, getting some sort of formal training will help you stand out among a plethora of resumes.
